Architecture of Authority

Architecture of Authority

Richard Ross (Photographs and Afterword), John R. MacArthur (Essay)

Category: Politics

For several years Richard Ross has been taking unsettling, thought-provoking pictures of architectural spaces that exert power over the individuals in them. From a Montessori preschool to churches, mosques, and diverse civic spaces, these images build to ever harsher manifestations of authority: an interrogation room at Guantánamo, segregation cells at Abu Ghraib, and finally, a capital punishment death chamber.
